Beck’s Field Dedication On Sunday November 3, 2013 the Penetanguishene Sports Hall of Fame Committee unveiled a commemorative plaque on the original site of the Town’s former baseball diamond – Beck’s Field. On hand to dedicate the plaque was Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop and Mayor Gerry Marshall, Penetanguishene Car Wash owners (site of the plaque) Anne and Aimé Gignac along with several invited special guests and interested citizens of the Town. The plaque/monument stone project was co-chaired by committee members Bob Bald and Denis O’Leary. The beautiful stone base for the plaque came from Parry Sound and the bronze plaque was manufactured in Toronto by Soheil Mosun Limited.* The company’s President, Cyrus Mosun, was also in attendance at the dedication ceremony. |
“This plaque marks the site of Beck’s Field which was the home of the Spencer Foundry Rangers Intermediate “B” baseball club in the 1930’s. At the height of the Rangers’ success the town would literally shut down as over 3,000 fans would gather here to cheer on their success. The field was built in the late 1920’s and maintained by the players and citizens of Penetanguishene.”

Photo Collage Narrative:
“The Penetanguishene Spencer Foundry Rangers/Chatham Coloured Stars series was scheduled to be as impartial as possible with the first game to be played in Penetanguishene, the second to be played in Chatham and the third to be held on neutral ground in the city of Guelph if it was needed. And that’s the way it went … sort of. In the first contest it was Babe Marchildon starting for the Rangers and Don Taborn countering for the Coloured Stars. Phil had 19 strikeouts that day allowing 7 hits and 2 walks while Taborn struck out 7 and allowed 8 hits. The game went into extra innings with Chatham scoring twice in the top of the 10th. The headline in the local news was: “3000 Fans Pack Beck Field. Penetanguishene came out to support their team in full force but were stricken by the outcome as Chatham defeated Penetanguishene by a score of 4-2.”
